Sorry for the delay, but as promised a little write up of our trip to Sacramento!
Circle of Sisters is a free after-school program for the 4thand 5thgrade girls at La Tecera. This year three 5thgrade girls were selected to advocate for a cause that was near and dear to them, funding for after-school programing and the importance of safe spaces for girls to freely express themselves. Rylee, Ashely and Keira, went on a two day trip to our state capitol in Sacramento in alignment with CalSAC (California Afterschool Consortium).
The first day the girls’ went to a daylong training about how to talk with their local legislators and senators and from this training created their own personal stories around the importance of after-school care. On the second day, the girls’ made signs that they marched with to the state capitol, there they met with their two district representatives’. This was an important trip for these young girls’ to express themselves and their activism. These girls’ are strong individuals who, through action and not keeping quiet, are showing other youth what it means to use their voice and empower others.
I have attached some pictures of this event. I also have some certificates I was hoping to drop off for the girls, could I leave these in the front office for them to pick up?
Please let me know if you need anything else and feel free to edit this paragraph as needed.
