Eagle Update

A special Art Mural project kicked off  the 2017-18 school year at La Tercera with art that engages all our students and enhances our school’s creative environment.  Panels give visual voice to “everything we love about STEM” and reflect real learning activities/approaches undertaken in the classroom: focus is life-science.  Class by class,

students worked with Artist Janet Self to create STEM inspired “mural” panels. Overall, 14 classroom-specific plus two entryway panels with all students, were completed and are installed throughout the school campus.  Final result is about a 100 foot “Mural” made up of multiple two sided panels installed around the campus.

The murals answer our school guiding STEM question; "How might we make STEM our identity," developed with the assistance of Parker Thomas and using the Design Thinking Process from the Stanford Design School.

Thank you to PTA for supporting  this work, which is  done on Tyvek, a synthetic ‘paper’ that can stand up to outdoor installation; Nova Color Acrylic paints are used, notable for their high quality and durability in murals world-wide  Janet Self is  engaging our Eagle  students in the art process, drawing on teamwork and STEM learning strategies using creative tools and implements.

Make sure to stroll our entire campus to enjoy these amazing panels. Mrs. Hodge

STRAW & Friends

GATE students from around the district partnered up with STRAW (Students and Teachers Restoring a Watershed) and Friends of the Petaluma River to study a local creek.  Both organizations provided water quality test kits which gave student's hands on experience.  Teachers from STRAW gave students lessons at the creek and in the classroom.  At the end our time the students were experts on using and reading pH tests, temperature readings, nitrate tests, phosphate tests, and dissolved oxygen tests.
Our guest teachers helped students develop a deeper understanding about where nitrates and phosphates come from and how each test is affected by various factors.
A big, big thank you to our friends at STRAW and FOTPR.
